History

Charter Steel Trading Co., Inc. was established in 1976 in Chicago, IL. In its inception, Charter Steel was a steel brokerage house, primarily trading steel coils, with its offices located on the Magnificent Mile. Shortly after it was started, Gary Birnbaum joined the company, knowing nothing about steel or the steel industry. Gary grew up in New York and went to college in the Midwest. He learned the business through hard work, dedication, and his impressive ability to sell steel. As the company grew, Gary decided it was necessary to expand the company’s footprint and enter into the slitting and warehousing business. He purchased a facility at 4401 West Roosevelt Road, on Chicago’s west side and, in 1978, bought the company’s first slitting line. Additional slitting lines were added throughout the years to keep up with growing demand. Later, in 2010, the company expanded further and purchased a second facility on Chicago’s west side, located at 1600 South Kostner. This facility houses two cut to length lines, a shear and provides additional storage space for coil warehousing, along with rail access. In addition to this second facility, in 2010, a second generation entered the business as Gary’s son Evan also joined the company. With over 250,000 square feet of warehouse and production space in Chicago, Charter Steel is centrally located and services customers throughout North America. Our dedicated team is here to support your steel needs.
